Hi guys. I think it's about time I officially Explained the workings of our feature system here in this group, because many of you would like to know how to contribute.

The Goals
We have 3 goals here at AnthroCommunity when it comes to featuring the work of community Members.

1.] PROMOTE examples of excellence in anthro.
The Anthro community is constantly scrutinized and looked down upon by outside artists and the general internet community because of the more questionable tastes embedded in the "Furry Fandom". To what you consider questionable is your own cup of tea, but I will remind you; this is not FurAffinity. This is deviantART.
The goal here is to promote artwork for the sake of artwork, but at the same time, expose the more ignorant people out there to what truly makes Anthro a special and respectable Genre.

2.] INSPIRE amateurs, hobbyists, and perspective art students with examples of excellence
We all are inspired by the work of others. Seeing something truly phenomenal can spark anyone's inspiration and motivation. The young audience here is a terrific place to start. If we inspire, we can guide the community in a positive direction.

3.] EXPOSE unknown talent and provide more opportunities for amateurs to seek the spotlight.
Kick ass art is often in the spotlight- and while that can cover #1 and #2 above, sometimes the up and coming might be left out because they aren't quite polished enough in technique. But we have to make these guys feel special, because if someone never gave me the opportunity to feel special while I was still very young in my art skill...I don't think I would've had the motivation to continue.

What Members Can Do to get Exposed
ALL members are welcome to submit artwork of their own or someone else to the group's Faves. Do so with courtesy, as flooding can present problems. But you are welcome to use that tool whenever your heart desires.

Ok so I submitted my artwork to the faves... is that it? Now What?
The feature team here has surprises in store for you! Every week, we will be taking a look in those faves and digging up some of your artwork to feature in a weekly news article!
Also, Katmomma will be choosing an exclusive piece from the faves to feature right here on the home page of the group.
There are many feature opportunities in the future-- the options are endless! And the home page itself is covered in member artwork ;) we've totally pimped it!

What is the Gallery for? How come Members can't submit to it? And maybe I just want my art in people's inboxes?
After doing much research with other group submission systems, it has become a regular complaint that a flood of submissions in galleries is annoying in people's inboxes, especially if a lot of deviants participate in more than one group. Also we have to consider for organizational reasons that a flood of submissions would only defeat the purpose of exposure, as the gallery grows, older submissions get covered and shoved behind. At least with random favorites, some older pieces get brought to the front ;)

So to make the best of our gallery tool, the staff here has dedicated it to featuring pieces from the faves, and will be using it to highlight outstanding art on a weekly basis.
At this time, we do have a folder in the gallery for staff members as a thank you for their contribution and dedication to helping this community run like a well oiled machine.

In the future, we may open up new folders for new community projects :D Keep your eyes peeled!

Well this isn't fair because only the popular people are going to be featured..
Excuse me but if you've read our goals above, we aren't interested in how popular you are. We are interested in promoting, inspiring, and exposing-- and that includes artists who are still blossoming and developing their skill. We want to encourage you to strive for the better, and at the same time, give you a pat on the back for doing a great job so far. :) Stronger art creates a stronger interest, and if you are out to get that attention, you have to keep learning and moving forward. The Educator team here can help you too.

As for news article features, we will be featuring art of all calibers, because we are all in this together. You as a member can come here and pick from the favorites to do your own features. Spread the love and Let's make it awesome!

What We Do NOT Accept
Here is a list of things that would deny your artwork into our group. If your deviation was declined you can always inquire as to why but make sure you take a look at this list to ensure your artwork won't be declined.
:bulletred: Nudity or suggestive themes or sexual themes ( FAQ #220: What is Mature Content? ) :bulletred: Strong Language: Can be applied to deviations containing profanity, vulgarity, and otherwise coarse or offensive language at the discretion of the submitter :bulletred: Art work that doesn't meet our quality standards :bulletred: Copyrighted artwork / Stolen artwork :bulletred: Line art or character sheets

* please note we are going to be working on revising our submission guidelines to help you understand what is / isn't accepted into our group! So we are working on modifying and refining our guidelines so these are subject to change *

Do you see the little bar with your name and icon? Under the group icon? There should be an arrow pointing down right to the right. Click it and select "Suggest a Favorite" (it has a star next to it). A window will appear with several tabs, named "Your Favourites", "Your Gallerty", "Your Friends", and "All of deviantART". If you are trying to submit your own art, you are going to have to click "Your Gallery", since by default the window opens at the "Your Favourites" tab. Then just select the deviation and click "Submit". When done, click "Done."

So to put it bluntly no member can submit their own art but can only suggest another person's art in order for it to be submitted into the group.

You can suggest your own art for the favorites as well as others work.

We do not have an open gallery because of the reasons above.

Finially! a club that isn't into the 'flooding fad' I really love your feature idea, its gives people somthing to aim for, and will make it that much more special when/if they get a feature!

Although i think there should be another folder for other artists, who are trying their best to learn and move forward, who don't quite fit the 'exalance box' yet, they perhaps should get a mini feature when they show an exsample of great improvment (because we all know support is a big part of what makes us grow because it gives us the energy to)

Anyway, love what you guys are doing with the club so far!

keep up the good work =D

Its wierd, in your mission statement you claim to promote unknown people.

"EXPOSE unknown talent and provide more opportunities for amateurs to seek the spotlight."

I took a moment in your gallery (The one part of any group that gets ACTUAL exposure) and almost every piece featured are from your various staff members. There were only TWO pieces that weren't from your current staff. Just two pieces of unknown art were all that have made it into anybody's inboxes.

Its like you dangle the "...provide more opportunities for amateurs to seek the spotlight." like a carrot in front of the people who join and watch your group. But your group only gives gallery exposure to its main staff. Like an inner circle promotional tool. Amateurs may "seek" your spotlight but none of them will ever obtain it since they are not part of your staff.

I have joined many groups and I love the freedom many of them grant random no name people to present their artwork. Each night I relax with my laptop in front of my television shows and I spend an hour giving back to all those groups by looking at various deviantions that flood my inbox. I get exposure and I GIVE exposure.

Please do open your gallery to the public. (And stop using it so exclusively to promote only your staff members) Random people deserve exposure.

Nobody looks in a "faves" folder. "faves" aren't "the spotlight" they are backstage.

If you don't want people flooding just impose rules and warn/ban those who flood.

Thank you for your time.

Ouch.
I'm actually offended by that comment.

I spend a huge amount of time browsing our member's galleries, as well as the anthro galleries as a whole on dA.

I spend a lot of time voting on what should or shouldn't be accepted into our group's favourites, along with the other staff members. We often have disputes over what gets accepted and the great thing about the group voting process is that you can add a comment with your vote, where we discuss things.

I am one of your "main staff" that you quote there, I can't find a single piece of my work in our favourites - neither would I want to! There are some areas, such as the tutorials, where there are a few staff member's pieces. That's because they've gone out of their way to provide us with these tutorials. And it's these helpful and caring qualities that make them staff for our group. I think if you'll take a look, you'll find that most of those pieces came long before they were staff in #AnthroCommunity or groups were even around!

If you have a problem with any of the pieces we have added to our favourites then please send me a note about it; especially if they're pieces created by "staff" members! I can absolutely truthfully say that there isn't a single piece of art or guidence in our favourites by a member of staff that wouldn't be there were they not staff.

If, however, you're arguing that the art in our gallery is unfair because it's created entirely by staff then you need to re-read the journal! ;) And then you can take another look at the gallery, reread what I said above and see that I'm still telling the truth: we are showcasing a selection of the best anthro art on dA, alongside art which the artists are particularly proud of, art which makes you think or things which will help you create your art.

A small number of the members of staff here are actually staff because of the amazing art which they create, and because of the incredible inspiration and admiration which they give people. In a similar way to how dA's senior project works.

There are many, many groups which are specialised to a particular type or taste of anthro art. We want to show areas of all anthro art that will appeal to everyone. This sometimes means that not every submission to our favourites can be approved. This in no way means that each and every submission isn't valued.

The comment about submitting to our gallery is fair, and I understand, but it won't be happening.
There are many groups which allows it - but this group is a little different, it's an official dA group and we're working in a very specialised way with very specialised aims, as you can read in ^Katmomma's original blog entry. I have a problem, as I watch over 2,000 people, that I can't keep up with floods of new pictures submitted to groups every day - lots of people have this problem, which is one of the reasons why we've decided upon operating our submissions in this way. It doesn't mean that people are less valued and they still get exposure. Through the many, many, many features which we do and will be doing - and that's on top of people simply browsing our wonderful favourites for insperation, as I know many people do.

This has gone on a little and I'm sorry for that. But, as I said, your comment offended me personally (as well as a couple of other of members of staff). We work really hard to try and make this group fair and accessible for everyone and while that means we won't always be able to please everyone absolutely, we do try our best to make everyone happy with something.

By all means I do appreciate that you give a very mature discussion about how you feel. Thank you.

Its very nice that you don't have your own artwork in the gallery and fave section, and taking the time out to look at other deviants is highly admirable. But there are those staff members that have taken their own art into the faves section and then pushed it to the main gallery. While 200+ deviants who are not staff wait in the wings. The page claims you can't submit directly because the staff will pick the cream of the crop to go in there. I just wish there were more of the non-staff with art in the official gallery.

I know, Katmomma points out that the group is pretty new so there hasn't been the time to appoint random unknowns to the gallery. And I'm thankful for his well thought out reply.

I didn't mean to offend you personally. From your reply, you do the right thing. Checking out unpopular galleries and unknown deviants is a great thing.

Again, thank you for being very mature about a sensitive subject.

:giggle: Anytime! ;P

Very few members of staff have the ability to add artwork into the galleries. There is a collection which features staff member's art, as a kind of reward for all the amazing work they do for the community, but it's subject to the same rules and expectations that anyone else's art is.

The "official gallery" features art which is picked from the favourites. I actually do the picking, I'm currently working on selecting and featuring art submitted to our favourites. You can see the first feature, ^Katmomma submitted it as a news article last night and I'm now going through and copying the pieces from our favourites to the gallery (a process which takes a painful amount of time!

I will agree, there is a few things of staff art, but they're often suggested by other artists and very rarely the staff members themselves.

We just got this group started :B and it's only the first week we actually put this new system of doing things in place. 2 pieces have been featured this week in the gallery for members, and a news article with several pieces from the favorites was just launched yesterday.

Over time, the feature gallery will grow. Right now it is small because we just got started. Staff only gets one folder, whereas over the coming weeks, Members will be sorted into many more for new and upcoming features.

So before you point a finger and say things are unfair because we aren't providing a free-for-all, think about the logic of organization first. It takes time to do organization and it requires little steps at a time to provide the most efficient form of exposure. I do forsee an open folder in the future. But we must take this slowly because my staff isn't here to slave over moderating problems. My staff is here to spend their time giving back to the community.

If everyone piled everything in at once, Your work wouldn't get seen in a more special light. Yes there are groups out there that can pull it off, but these groups are smaller. Larger groups have to be more careful about organizing things.

Certainly, I wouldn't want others to turn off the devwatch on our group because of flooding-- which by the way, doesn't just happen with one person all the time. Flooding can be caused by multiple members submitting things at the same time.

Thanks, I had no intentions of finger pointing or to slam you. Its just felt odd seeing 200+ deviations waiting backstage in the fave section and 90% + staff in the real gallery. Also the handful of staff nominating their own work into the faves section and moving those pieces into the gallery doesn't feel right. That comes off as a staff only thing. I do wish your group well, I just hope that public submission folder in the gallery does come sooner than later.

It looks bad now because Like I said- we just got started :XD: trust me, the number of opportunities for members to get their work in the gallery will greatly outweigh the staff's small spot. And staff art runs on only the best of our work. It's not a free-for-all either.

The gallery will grow with time :)
